Metals Lab Technician — Chicago Spectro Service Laboratory (Chicago, IL)
In 1946, our founder won a car in a raffle and traded it in to start a metals-testing lab. Three generations later, we're still family-owned, still on Chicago's Southwest Side — and we're hiring.
About us Chicago Spectro Service Laboratory is an independent metal-testing lab. Manufacturers across the region send us their steel, aluminum, and other metals, and we tell them what it's made of and how strong it is — using emission spectroscopy, atomic absorption, and hardness and impact testing. We're small, we're precise, and the work we do actually matters to the people who rely on it.
What you'll do
Prep metal samples — cut, mount, grind, and polish them using saws and polishers
Run mechanical tests — hardness, impact, tensile, and fatigue
Record and verify your test data for quality checks
Keep the lab running — calibrate instruments and handle basic upkeep
Work safely and follow OSHA and lab safety rules
What we're looking for
Someone mechanically inclined who's careful and accurate — this is precision work
Comfortable with basic math and using a computer to log results
High school diploma or vocational training; an associate's degree in engineering or materials science is a plus
1–3 years in a materials lab is great, but not required — if you're good with tools, we'll teach you the rest
Able to lift heavy samples and stay on your feet for much of the day
