OmniTRAX is looking to hire a Civil Engineer to join our dynamic team of employees in a fast-growing, fast-paced work environment.
The Civil Engineer - Railroad performs engineering services accurately, thoroughly and consistent with best industry and ethical practices to meet the company objectives. Supports, contributes and promotes safe and efficient operations of each railroad’s Engineering Department and of OmniTRAX. Ensures compliance with all regulations and company standards. Supports various engineering tasks, such as: develops and maintains project schedules; monitors project compliance related to scope, schedule and budget; develops site plans for new customers; assists with special projects related to growth and develops contract specifications and bid documents that meet or exceed company goals.

Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
Provide engineering support to Rail Operations, Capital Projects, and other departments to maintain railroads, right of ways and facilities (civil/structural) in good state of repair and/or development
Prepare project cost estimates, operating and capital budgets, develop of AFE’s, and monitor AFE’s in progress
Develop drawings, plans and exhibits as necessary to determine land use opportunity
Ensure the overall safety and compliance in the execution of projects
Monitor multiple projects efficiently to ensure compliance related to scope, schedule, budget
Monitor work processes and ensure procedures are followed and maintained to provide a safe, effective and productive work environment that meet governing regulations and company standards
Monitor construction processes for assigned projects from commencement of project through project close-out: review design plans and construction/installation schedules; attend planning and construction progress meetings and prepare meeting minutes; perform site inspections to assure compliance with project specifications, ancillary documents, acceptable work practices; ensure conformance to FRA, federal, state and local regulations
Understand and know the Railroad business; service needs of internal/external customers; develop maintenance or improvement plans to meet operational requirements
Support safety programs; promote the safety goals for all Maintenance of Way groups on each project; support the required safety training for employees, contractors, and/or other applicable parties
Observe safety on the project related to Engineering activity is conducted in accordance with all applicable directives and policies
Assist in the execution of all aspects of Engineering activities including: inspection processes compared to standards, Engineering and Construction knowledge of applicable tools, equipment systems and resources
Conduct frequent inspections and audits across the projects or property including documentation of all work to ensure compliance for project; engineering activities including, but not limited to: safety of operations and work quality
Identify root causes of engineering structural issues and present appropriate solutions
Document all work processes in writing, drawings/sketches, calculations or tabulations: provide thorough accounting of process and quality assurance review by senior Engineering management
Work closely with senior Engineering management in support of system-wide programs and plans
Prepare and monitor Authorizations for Expenditure (AFE) in progress or any other engineering work including: developing, maintaining and reporting on project(s) scope, schedule and cost estimate
Understand, achieve and adhere to and report on engineering performance metrics and measurements, evaluating performance plan to actual plan
Monitor contract services to assure that OmniTRAX contracting processes are followed; activities include: developing contract bid documents and specifications, participate in pre-bid meetings, pre-construction meetings, work plan and project execution, review, and close-out
Effectively communicate project updates and challenges to all project stakeholders
Assist in a thorough and complete incident investigation to determine and document root cause, as needed
May work with government agencies to successfully carryout public projects
Continually develops personal knowledge of engineering and construction best practices and standards by leveraging job experience
May monitor the logistics and control of materials
Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
Wear required protective equipment (PPE) such as: hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, safety glasses etc.
Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime and various shift work
Perform other duties and projects as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
2-5 years’ related experience in railroad infrastructure engineering or project related work experience
High aptitude in mathematics, organization, planning and time management; business acumen
Knowledgeable in monitor of contractors, projects, budget planning and management, maintenance budget planning and execution, preparation of capital plans
Strong interpersonal skills to interact with various government agencies specific to railroads
Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite; Advanced Excel skills; basic MS Project or other project related software
Read and understand engineering drawings, schematics, construction plans and right-of-way maps
Read, comprehend, comply and communicate FRA and company rules, regulations, specifications and/or guidelines
Write legibly to document items of non-compliance
Strong attention to detail; multi-task to coordinate various activities simultaneously
Effectively communicate with all level of employees and business associates in a clear, concise and professional manner
Read, comprehend and comply with published rules, procedures and manuals, inspection checklists, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information
Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills resulting in effective resolution
Professional integrity and accountability
Work in fast-paced collaborative environment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Previous experience in Rail Transportation, Supply Chain Logistics, Manufacturing and/or Oil & Gas industries
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering - Civil or Transportation
AutoCAD working knowledge and experience
NetSuite or other ERP software experience
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Professional Engineer Certification
Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or windy conditions caused by the weather including: snow, rain, heat and sub-freezing temps
Up to 50%, as business requires
